Meet Our Instructors

Retired Chief Electrical Engineer Joe Hertel

Joe Hertel earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering from UW–Madison’s College of Engineering. A licensed Master Electrician, Commercial Electrical Inspector, and Registered Professional Engineer in Wisconsin, he brings over 40 years of experience in the electrical industry, beginning with the U.S. Navy. Joe served as Supervising and Chief Electrical Engineer and Program Manager for Electrical, Boiler, Elevator, and Fire Prevention programs for the State of Wisconsin. Since retiring, he has provided consulting and training on electrical codes and licensing exam preparation.

The Construction Classroom Michael Somers

Mike is a University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point graduate with a degree in Business Management and over 40 years of construction experience as a business owner and manager. A former ABC Wisconsin Board member, he helped launch the Heavy Equipment Operator Apprenticeship program and has taught it for several years. Mike currently teaches Heavy Equipment Operations, Construction Craft Laborers, and multiple leadership and management courses for ABC Wisconsin, sharing a lifetime of real-world industry experience.

Director of Education Katie Neubauer

Katie Neubauer leads the education efforts at ABC of Wisconsin, advancing the next generation of skilled professionals in the construction industry. Driven by a passion for learning and opportunity, Katie works closely with industry partners, educators, and members to ensure ABC’s programs align with real-world needs and emerging technologies.
